Novo mesto is the educational, administrative, economic, religious, cultural, medical and sporting centre of Dolenjska. It is renowned for its successful pharmaceutical, automotive, construction and textile industry among others. Several large companies are based in the Novo mesto municipality, such as Krka, Revoz, Adria Mobil and TPV.
Novo mesto was granted its town charter on 7 April 1365 by the Duke of Austria, Rudolf IV. This date is also commemorated by a municipal holiday. As it has rich archaeological sites, Novo mesto is also called Novo mesto – the town of situalae. Some of the most distinctive features in the town include the Krka River and its famous hairpin bend enveloping the town centre, the Chapter Church of St Nicholas, containing the only work by the famous Italian painter Tintoretto in Slovenia, the town's Glavni trg (main square) with the town hall and the well know Breg.
